Strange Noises From Your AC: What Each Sound Means
An AC system has a normal sound. Outdoor unit hums steadily. Indoor blower runs smooth. You should not really notice it after a while. When that changes, your system is telling you something. Each sound usually points to a specific part.
Here is the field guide we wish every homeowner had.
| Sound | Likely cause | Urgency | Avg repair cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Banging / clanking | Loose part, fan blade, compressor mount | Stop now | $200 to $4,500 |
| Screeching / squealing | Bearings going, weak start capacitor | This week | $180 to $900 |
| Hissing | Refrigerant leak | Stop now | $450 to $1,800 |
| Rapid clicking | Failing contactor or relay | This week | $200 to $450 |
| Gurgling / bubbling | Low refrigerant or clogged drain | Few days | $150 to $1,800 |
| Humming without start | Bad capacitor | This week | $180 to $400 |
| Rattling | Loose panel or debris | Soon | $0 to $200 |
| Buzzing electrical | Loose wire or failing motor | Stop now | $200 to $900 |
Hearing a sound that worries you?
Same-day diagnosis. Most noises are quick fixes if you call early.
Banging or clanking
What it means: Something is loose inside the unit. Most often a fan blade hitting the housing, a compressor mount that has broken, or a piston in the compressor that is failing.
What to do: Turn the system off at the thermostat. Do not run it. Banging gets worse fast and can destroy the compressor. Call us.
Screeching or squealing
What it means: Bearings on the blower motor or the outdoor fan motor are going. Or a belt (on older systems) is slipping. The pitch tells you which part. High and constant when running, motor bearings. Intermittent and louder on startup, often the start capacitor is starting to fail and the motor is straining.
What to do: Stop running it for long periods. A motor that is screeching is on its way out. Replacing it on a planned visit is way cheaper than replacing it after it seizes and damages the rest of the system.
Hissing
What it means: A refrigerant leak, almost always. Refrigerant under pressure makes a hiss when it escapes through a small hole.
Where you hear it matters:
- Hissing at the indoor coil: leak at the indoor coil or the metering device
- Hissing at the outdoor unit: leak at the outdoor coil or one of the service ports
- Hissing along the line set: leak at a flare or brazed joint
What to do: Turn the system off. Running with low refrigerant damages the compressor. Get a tech out to find the leak.
Clicking (rapid)
What it means: A relay that is trying to engage but cannot. The contactor inside the outdoor unit, or the start relay, is the usual culprit. You hear it on startup.
Could also be a thermostat issue if you hear the click from inside the house at the thermostat or the air handler.
What to do: Turn it off. Call us. This is a common, easy fix on a service call.
Gurgling or bubbling
What it means: Two possibilities. Either refrigerant low (you hear vapor moving where there should be liquid), or your condensate drain line has a clog and water is bubbling back through the trap.
If gurgling is at the indoor unit and you also see water around the air handler, drain line. More on that here.
What to do: If it is the drain line, you can sometimes clear it with a wet/dry vac at the outdoor end. If it is refrigerant, that is a tech job.
Humming without start
What it means: The compressor or fan motor is getting power but cannot start. Usually a bad capacitor. Sometimes a stuck or seized motor.
What to do: Turn it off after about 30 seconds of humming. Continued humming is hard on the motor windings. Call us. We replace capacitors all the time.
Rattling
What it means: Mostly cosmetic. A loose access panel, a cover that needs new screws, sometimes debris (a stick or a leaf) inside the outdoor unit.
What to do: Turn the unit off. Walk around the outdoor unit. Look for visible debris in the top grille. If you can safely retrieve it, do so. Tighten any obvious loose panels. If it still rattles, call us.

Why is my AC making a banging noise?
Banging means something inside the unit is loose or broken. Most often a fan blade hitting the housing or a compressor mount that has come loose. Turn the system off. Banging gets worse fast and can destroy the compressor.
What does an AC hissing sound mean?
Hissing almost always means a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant under pressure escapes through a small hole and you hear the gas. Turn the system off and call a tech. Running with low refrigerant burns out the compressor.
Why is my AC making a clicking noise?
A relay or contactor that is trying to engage but cannot, usually inside the outdoor unit. Common, easy fix on a service call ($200 to $450). Could also be a thermostat issue if the click is at the thermostat itself.
What does it mean when my AC is humming but not starting?
The compressor or fan motor has power but cannot start. Most often a bad capacitor (cheap fix, $180 to $400). Sometimes a seized motor. Turn it off after 30 seconds of humming, the motor windings will overheat.
Why is my AC making a screeching noise?
Bearings on the blower or outdoor fan motor are going. Plan on a motor replacement soon ($450 to $900). The longer you run it, the more likely the motor seizes and damages other parts.
What is a normal AC sound?
A steady hum from the outdoor unit and a smooth whoosh from the indoor blower. You should not really notice it once you are used to it. Anything sharp, sudden, or new is worth investigating.
Should I keep running my AC if it is making noise?
Banging, hissing, buzzing and humming-without-start: stop. Screeching, clicking, gurgling: short runs only until a tech can look at it. Rattling: usually fine.
How much does it cost to fix a noisy AC?
Capacitor: $180 to $400. Contactor: $200 to $450. Fan motor: $450 to $900. Refrigerant leak: $450 to $1,800. Compressor: $2,200 to $4,500. We give you a quote first.
