AC Smells Musty? How Mold, Moisture and Airflow Connect
That musty, slightly sour smell when your AC kicks on β sometimes called "dirty sock syndrome" in the trade β is one of the most common indoor air quality complaints we hear, especially in humid coastal homes. The good news: it almost always traces back to one of a few specific spots, and most of them are fixable.
| Source | When you notice it | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| Evaporator coil (mold/mildew) | Strongest right when AC kicks on | $150-$400 (coil cleaning) |
| Clogged or slow drain pan/line | Constant musty smell, may pair with water near unit | $100-$300 |
| Dirty/wet air filter | Musty smell, dustier air | $15-$80 |
| Ductwork (mold growth inside) | Smell from specific vents/rooms | $300-$1,500+ |
| Oversized AC, excess humidity | Musty + house feels clammy | Varies β diagnostic needed |
That musty smell isn't going away?
We can find the source β coil, drain line, ductwork β and fix it.
The evaporator coil
This is the indoor coil where the actual cooling happens β and it's wet, by design, every time your AC runs. That moisture is supposed to drain away. But if dust builds up on the coil, it holds moisture longer and creates a surface for mold and mildew to grow on. Air passes directly over this coil before it goes into your ductwork, so any odor here gets distributed throughout the house immediately.
The telltale sign: the smell is strongest in the first few minutes after the system kicks on, then fades.
The condensate drain pan and line
Your AC produces a surprising amount of water β often several gallons a day in our humidity. That water collects in a drain pan and exits through a condensate line. If that line is partially clogged, water sits longer than it should, and standing water plus the dark, enclosed space of an air handler is a perfect environment for mold and algae growth. If you're also seeing water, start here.
A dirty or wet filter
A filter that's overdue for replacement holds onto moisture along with dust and debris, especially in humid conditions. It can develop its own musty smell that gets pulled through the system every time the blower runs. This is the cheapest thing to rule out β pull the filter and take a look (and a sniff).
Mold inside ductwork
If the smell seems to come from specific vents or rooms rather than the whole house, and the coil and drain line check out, mold growth inside the ductwork itself is possible β particularly in flexible ductwork that has gotten wet at some point, or ducts in humid crawlspaces. This is less common but harder to fix, often requiring duct cleaning or, in bad cases, replacement of affected sections. More on duct issues here.
Excess humidity overall
Sometimes there isn't one specific moldy component β the whole system and home are just running at higher humidity than they should be, and everything (coil, drain pan, ductwork, even surfaces in the house) stays a little damper than ideal. This is more common with oversized AC systems that short cycle and don't run long enough to dehumidify effectively. More on humidity and indoor air quality.
What to do about it
- Check and replace your filter if it's dirty, wet, or overdue. Cheapest first step.
- Notice the timing. Smell strongest right when the system starts and fading after a few minutes points to the coil. A constant smell points to the drain line or ductwork.
- Check for water near the indoor unit, which often pairs with a drain line issue.
- If the smell is localized to certain rooms or vents, ductwork is the more likely cause and usually needs a professional inspection.
- If nothing obvious turns up, a coil cleaning and drain line flush during a maintenance visit resolves the majority of musty-smell calls.
Ready to get rid of that smell?
Coil cleaning, drain line service, and duct inspections β same-day in most cases.

Why does my AC smell musty when it first turns on?
This is the classic sign of mold or mildew growing on the indoor evaporator coil or in the drain pan. Moisture sits on these parts between cooling cycles, and when the system kicks back on, that musty-smelling air gets pushed through your vents.
Is a musty smell from my AC dangerous?
Mold and mildew in an AC system are not usually an immediate emergency, but they can affect indoor air quality and may worsen allergy or respiratory symptoms for sensitive individuals over time. It is worth addressing rather than ignoring.
Can I get rid of a musty AC smell myself?
Changing the filter and clearing the condensate drain line are things many homeowners can do themselves and sometimes help. But if the smell is coming from mold on the coil itself or inside ductwork, that requires professional cleaning.
Will a UV light fix a musty AC smell?
A UV light installed near the coil can help prevent mold and mildew from regrowing after a cleaning, but it isn't a substitute for cleaning an already-dirty coil or clearing a clogged drain line.
How much does it cost to fix a musty-smelling AC?
A coil cleaning and drain line service typically runs $150 to $400. If the smell is coming from mold inside ductwork, costs vary more depending on what's affected, often $300 to $1,500 or more.
