Panama City is humid most of the year and the house is humid because the AC is not removing enough moisture, not because it lacks a gadget. Fix those and the sticky feeling goes with them; add a dehumidifier on top of them and you have bought a product to fight your own equipment.
St. Andrews, the Cove and Forest Park have plenty of homes where the ducts and the attic have been patched for decades. Attic air is dusty, humid and hot, and a return leak brings all three into the living space after the filter. Sealing the return side often does more for air quality than any product.
The evaporator coil is wet all summer in this climate and the drain pan sits under it. Left uncleaned, both grow things, and the smell comes out of every vent when the blower starts. A UV light installed at the coil helps keep it clean; cleaning it first is the part people skip.

Panama City gets the Gulf humidity without the Gulf breeze. Houses here run the AC hard from April to October and the coil stays wet the whole time, which is why coil and drain cleanliness matter more here than almost anywhere.
St. Andrews, the Cove and Forest Park have homes with original ductwork, original insulation and returns that were sized for smaller systems. Duct leaks and attic air are the source of a lot of the dust and humidity people try to fix with a purifier.
Post-storm rebuilds and window replacements have made a lot of Panama City houses tighter than they were built to be. Less fresh air gets in, so filtration and purification carry more of the load than they used to.
The problems behind most Panama City air quality calls, in roughly the order we find them.
An air conditioner dehumidifies by running long enough for the coil to pull moisture out of the air. An oversized system reaches the setpoint quickly, shuts off, and never gets there. A dirty coil cannot absorb moisture. Duct leaks on the return side feed humid attic air in faster than the system can dry it. Short cycling from any cause has the same effect.
We check runtime, coil condition and the return ducts before talking about a dehumidifier. Where the system is right and the moisture load is still too high, a whole-home dehumidifier integrated with the HVAC system holds the house in a comfortable range. Where the system is wrong, the dehumidifier is fighting it.
The evaporator coil is wet all summer. The drain pan under it holds water. If either is not clean, biological growth starts, and the blower pushes the smell out of every vent when the system starts. Ducts with moisture in them do the same.
A UV light installed at the coil helps keep the coil and pan clean. It does nothing for a clogged drain line or a duct problem, which is why we inspect before installing one. Cleaning the coil and treating the drain is the part that gets skipped.
Filters catch what passes through them. Dust that enters after the filter, through return-side duct leaks or around a badly fitted filter, comes straight out of the vents. Attic air is full of insulation fibres and fine dust, and in a Panama City house with an old return, that is what the system is breathing.
Sealing the return side and correcting the filter rack usually fix more than a purifier does. A filtration upgrade on top of that is where the remaining dust goes.
Filtration removes particles. Purification addresses odours, stale air and broader air quality concerns. If dust is the main issue, filtration is the first step. If the house smells or feels stale after the basics are handled, a whole-home purifier is worth considering.
