The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motor the jolt they need to start. The contactor is the switch that tells the outdoor unit to run at all. When either one fails the indoor blower keeps pushing room-temperature air while the outdoor unit sits silent, hums, or clicks. It is one of the least expensive repairs we make, which is exactly why it is worth having diagnosed properly instead of replaced on a guess.
Refrigerant does not get used up. If the charge is low, there is a leak, and topping it off without finding it is a repair you will pay for again in August. We find it, tell you where it is, and give you a repair number and, on an older R-22 system, a replacement number too.
Bay County humidity means the system pulls gallons of water out of the air every day, and every drop goes down one small PVC line. Algae and dust eventually close it. We clear it, treat it, and fit a float switch if the previous installer skipped one.

Five miles inland changes the job. The housing is older, the heat has no Gulf breeze to break it, and a lot of ductwork has been patched since 2018.
St. Andrews, the Cove, Forest Park and downtown have plenty of houses built in the 1970s to 1990s, some still running the equipment they were built with. Parts availability, R-22, and undersized returns are daily conversations here in a way they are not on the Beach.
Panama City runs hotter in the afternoon than Panama City Beach and cools down slower at night. A system that is marginal on the Beach fails outright here in August, and a repair that restores full capacity matters more.

Five different faults produce this one symptom, which is why it is the most misdiagnosed call in the trade. Weak airflow from a filthy filter or evaporator coil, low refrigerant from a slow leak, an outdoor coil caked in dust so it cannot reject heat, a capacitor too weak to bring the compressor up to speed, or a thermostat calling for the wrong thing.
We check all five in a fixed order before quoting, because the wrong part is the repair you pay for twice. A dirty coil and a refrigerant leak can feel identical from inside the house and cost very different amounts to fix.
The capacitor stores the charge that starts the compressor and the fan motor. The contactor is the electrical switch that tells the outdoor unit to run. Between them they cause more no-cooling calls in Bay County than anything else, and they are among the cheapest parts on the system.

Your system pulls moisture out of the house air and drains it through a small PVC line. In Panama City humidity that is gallons a day, and algae grows in the line until it closes. The pan overflows, the closet floor gets wet, and if there is no float switch the system keeps running and keeps making water.
We clear the line, treat it, check the pan for rust-through, and fit a float switch if the installer skipped it. A float switch is the difference between a nuisance and a drywall repair.
One trip can be a storm or a surge. A second trip after a reset means a component is pulling more current than the circuit allows: a compressor that is seizing, a fan motor with failing bearings, a shorted capacitor, or a wire that has rubbed through in the outdoor unit.
Keep resetting it and you risk taking a repairable motor to a replacement compressor. Turn it off and call. This one is worth a same-day visit.
Refrigerant is sealed in the system and does not get consumed. If the charge is low, it leaked. Adding more without finding the leak feels like a cheap fix and becomes a recurring bill, and on an R-22 system the refrigerant itself is now the expensive part.
We locate the leak, repair it where that is sensible, and recharge to spec. When the leak is inside the evaporator coil of an old system, we say so and give you the replacement number alongside the repair, because that is usually where the money should go.
