Six things a Callaway AC does before someone calls us

Match what you are seeing to a card below. Each symptom narrows the fault, and that tells the technician which parts to have on the van before turning onto your street.

Call now

Dead silent on a hot afternoon

The thermostat is calling and nothing runs, inside or out, or the system starts and quits within a minute. If someone at home is elderly, an infant or medically fragile, tell us on the call.

📞 Call (850) 235-8834
Most common

Fine at breakfast, losing ground by 3pm

The house holds its setting in the morning, then drifts up all afternoon. That pattern points at a system that has lost capacity: an outdoor coil that cannot shed heat, a short refrigerant charge, or airflow choked somewhere along the way.

Why afternoons expose a weak system →
Usually inexpensive

The outdoor unit buzzes but the fan never spins

A humming condenser with a motionless fan blade is the classic sign of a failed capacitor or a contactor that no longer closes cleanly. Switch the system off so the compressor stops straining against it.

Capacitors and contactors →
Act today

A ceiling stain or a puddle at the closet door

The condensate has nowhere to go. In older Callaway houses the air handler often sits in a hall closet or up in the attic, so an overflowing pan can show up as a brown ring on the ceiling before anyone sees standing water.

Tracing the water →
Electrical

The AC breaker will not stay on

If it trips again after a single reset, leave it off. Something is drawing more current than the circuit was built for, and repeated resets can turn a motor repair into a compressor replacement.

What the breaker is telling you →
Older systems

Frost on the copper line, or a recharge every summer

Ice on the larger refrigerant line, or a unit that only cools properly after someone adds refrigerant, means a leak. On the R-22 systems still common in older Callaway homes, that changes the math fast.

Leaks on R-22 equipment →
What we fix

Three repairs we make in Callaway more than any others

Most summer calls from 32404 end up in one of these. Here is what is going on inside the equipment and how we deal with each one.

The everyday call

A start component that quit on the hottest day of the week

Every outdoor unit relies on a capacitor to get the compressor and fan motor turning, and on a contactor to switch the unit on when the thermostat asks for cooling. Inland Callaway heat is hard on both. When one gives out, the indoor blower keeps moving air that never gets cold. Typical Bay County market ranges, not a Quincy’s quote, run $150 to $400 for a capacitor and $150 to $350 for a contactor.

  • Capacitor measured against its rated value, not judged by its looks
  • Contactor inspected for burned or welded contacts
  • Fan motor and compressor current recorded after the repair
  • A root cause found when the same part keeps failing

Package units on older slab homes

Some older Callaway houses have no indoor air handler at all. Compressor, coil and blower share one cabinet outside, with ducts running through the wall or under the floor. Their drain and electrical faults look different from a split system, so we diagnose them at the cabinet, not from the hallway.

An R-22 system that keeps losing charge

R-22 is no longer produced, and installed prices in the Bay County market run about $90 to $175 a pound (a market range, not our quote). A leak on one of these systems is never only a refrigerant purchase. We find where it is escaping, then put the repair number and a replacement number side by side so you can choose with real figures.

How it works

How a Callaway repair call runs, from phone to finished

The same order every time. The price arrives on paper before any part is replaced.

Quincy’s Heating & Air service van, Air Conditioning & Heating, (850) 235-8834

Call (850) 235-8834 and describe what the system is doing. A person at Quincy’s answers, tells you the trip charge, and sets a time window. On site, the technician checks the outdoor unit, the indoor unit or package cabinet, the wiring, the refrigerant circuit and the condensate drain, then writes up what failed and what it costs to fix. You approve that price before any work starts.

Systems

The kinds of AC systems we repair in 32404

Not sure which one you have? Describe the outdoor unit on the call, or tell us where the indoor part lives.

Split systems

An outdoor condenser paired with an indoor air handler in a closet, garage or attic. The most common setup in Callaway.

Heat pumps

From the yard they look like an AC, but they also heat the house in winter by reversing the refrigerant flow.

Package units

Everything in a single outdoor cabinet, found on some older slab homes. Easy to misread from indoors, so we test them where the components actually are.

Older R-22 systems

Still cooling plenty of older Callaway houses. Electrical repairs on them often make sense; refrigerant repairs deserve a frank cost comparison first.

Equipment from the rebuild

Newer systems installed after the storm may still be inside the manufacturer’s parts coverage. Terms vary by brand, so check your paperwork, and keep the model and serial number from the outdoor data plate handy.

Thermostats and controls

Thermostats get swapped often in rental houses, and one wired wrong can shut cooling off entirely. We rule it out before we condemn any equipment.

The honest version

Fix the Callaway system you have, or price a new one?

On a street where rebuilt and original houses sit side by side, the answer depends far more on what failed than on the address.

Usually a sensible repair

Even on an older system

  • Capacitor, contactor or a burned wire at the disconnect
  • Condenser fan motor or indoor blower motor
  • Clogged condensate line, rusted pan or missing float switch
  • Thermostat or low-voltage wiring fault
  • A leak at an accessible fitting or service valve on an R-410A system
  • Almost any single failure on equipment installed during the rebuild

Ask for a replacement number first

Before money goes into the repair

  • A failed compressor on a system past about 12 years (the Bay County market range for a compressor is $1,500 to $3,500)
  • A leak in the evaporator coil of an R-22 system
  • A third major repair on the same unit within a few summers
  • Original equipment and ductwork that have never kept the house comfortable
No single rule fits every house, and a modest repair that carries an older unit through another summer can be the right call. AC installation in Callaway → · Still running an R-22 system? →

Local knowledge

What sets Callaway AC repair apart from the Beach

Callaway sits east of Panama City beside Tyndall Air Force Base, well away from the Gulf. Three things about the town shape nearly every repair call we run there.

Rebuilt houses next to original ones

Hurricane Michael hit Callaway and Tyndall very hard in October 2018. Some homes came back with new equipment and new ducts; others kept their original systems with storm repairs layered on top. Two houses on one street can need entirely different conversations.

Rentals, landlords and military moves

A large share of Callaway homes are rented, many to military families who relocate on orders. A tenant-occupied repair is a normal day for us. The tenant lets us in; the owner, wherever they happen to be, gets the written diagnosis and price to approve before anything is replaced.

Afternoon heat with no Gulf breeze

Inland, nothing takes the edge off a summer afternoon. July afternoons in the Panama City area average 91 F, and a 1960s to 1990s house with tired attic ductwork leaves an older system little capacity to spare. Small losses in performance show up here first.

If you want the detail

The five faults behind most Callaway AC repairs

Listed roughly in the order we find them. Open whichever sounds like your system.

Holding in the morning, falling behind in the afternoon

A system that keeps up at 9am and loses the house by mid-afternoon has not broken outright. It has lost capacity, and the inland heat is now bigger than what is left. The usual culprits: an outdoor coil packed with dust and pollen, a charge that has slowly leaked short, a capacitor drifting below its rating, or airflow strangled by a clogged filter, a dirty indoor coil or a crushed attic duct.

Each feels the same from the living room and costs something different to fix. We take temperatures, pressures and electrical readings under load, then quote the fault we can show you.

A humming outdoor unit and a fan that will not turn

The capacitor stores the burst of energy that gets the compressor and condenser fan moving. The contactor is a relay that closes when the thermostat calls and opens when it is satisfied. A weak capacitor leaves the motors humming without starting; a pitted contactor may chatter, stick open or stick closed. Either way the outdoor unit stops doing its job while the indoor fan carries on.

These are routine repairs, but also warning lights. A capacitor that keeps failing is often fighting a motor with worn bearings or an outdoor unit running too hot, so we record the current draw after the repair.

Water in the closet, or a stain on the ceiling under the attic

Cooling pulls moisture out of the house air, and in Bay County humidity that is a lot of water each day, all leaving through one narrow PVC line. Algae and dust eventually build a plug, the pan fills, and the water finds its own way out: across a closet floor, or through drywall when the air handler is in the attic.

We clear and flush the line, check the pans for rust, and fit a float switch where there is none. That switch cuts the system off when water backs up, so the next clog means a warm afternoon instead of a ceiling repair.

The breaker that trips every time it is reset

A single trip after a lightning storm can be a one-off. A breaker that trips again after a reset is protecting the wiring from something real: a compressor starting to seize, a fan motor dragging on failed bearings, a shorted capacitor, or a wire chafed through against the cabinet.

Leave the breaker off and call. Forcing a struggling compressor to restart over and over is how a fixable electrical fault becomes the most expensive part on the system.

A refrigerant leak on an older R-22 system

Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and is never used up, so a low charge always means a leak. On an R-22 system that matters more than usual, because the refrigerant is no longer manufactured. Topping it off without fixing the leak means paying that price again next summer. In the Bay County market, finding and repairing a leak runs about $400 to $1,600 plus refrigerant, a market range rather than our quote.

We locate the leak first. A leak at a service valve or a brazed joint can be a reasonable repair. A leak inside the evaporator coil of an old R-22 system usually is not, and we will tell you so plainly, with a replacement price next to the repair price so the decision is yours.

📞 Call (850) 235-8834
Is Callaway inside your regular AC repair area?

Yes. Callaway and the rest of 32404 are a daily route for our technicians, and we have taken calls there since 1979. The office is in Panama City Beach, but our trucks are out across the county all day, so an address near Tyndall is a routine stop rather than a special trip.

What does an AC repair in Callaway usually cost?

We tell you the flat trip charge on the phone before anyone is dispatched, and the repair price comes in writing before work starts. As a guide, most AC repairs in the Bay County market fall between $150 and $650. That is a typical market range, not a Quincy’s quote. Refrigerant work and major parts such as a compressor sit well above it.

How quickly can you get a technician to my Callaway house?

Same day in most cases. More than 95 percent of our service calls are handled the day they come in. When the schedule will not allow it, we tell you on the phone so you can plan around it instead of waiting by the window.

I own a rental in Callaway. Can you repair the AC while my tenant is home and I am not?

Yes, and it is a common call for us in Callaway. The tenant lets the technician in and describes what the system has been doing. You, as the owner, get the written diagnosis and the repair price, and nothing is replaced until you approve it. On the first call, tell us who authorizes the work and who should receive the paperwork.

My Callaway home still has an R-22 system. Should I keep repairing it?

It depends on what broke. A capacitor, contactor, fan motor or drain problem is an ordinary repair on an R-22 system. A refrigerant leak is different: R-22 is no longer produced, and installed prices in the Bay County market run about $90 to $175 a pound (a market range, not our quote). When the leak is in the coil or the compressor has failed, we put a replacement price next to the repair price.

Why does my AC keep up in the morning but not in the afternoon?

The afternoon is when a weakened system runs out of headroom. Inland Callaway gets no Gulf breeze, and a dirty outdoor coil, a slightly low charge, a weak capacitor or restricted airflow can all stay hidden until the heat peaks. We measure the system while it is working hard to find which one it is.

There is water around my indoor unit or a stain on the ceiling. What should I do?

Switch the system off at the thermostat and call. The cause is nearly always a blocked condensate line or an overflowing pan. We clear the line, inspect the pan, and add a float switch if one is missing, so a future clog shuts the system off before water reaches the floor or ceiling.

Do you offer after-hours AC repair in Callaway?

Yes, for genuine no-cooling situations on evenings, weekends and holidays. After-hours service costs more than a weekday visit, so if the house is still cooling and the issue is a new noise, we will tell you it can wait for a regular appointment.

What guarantee comes with the repair?

Every repair carries a written labor warranty, and you have that paperwork before the technician leaves. If the same fault comes back inside the warranty period, call us and we return to put it right without a labor charge.
